Standard 5: Managerial Leadership
Principals will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem-solving, communicating expectations and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. The principal must be responsible for the monitoring of the school budget and the inclusion of all teachers in the budget decision so as to meet the 21st century needs of every classroom. Effectively and efficiently managing the complexity of every day life is critical for staff to be able to focus its energy on improvement.
A. School Resources and Budget: The school executive establishes budget processes and systems which are focused on, and result, in improved student achievement.
Using ESSER Funding to Fill Needs at Our School
Traditionally, DPLC does not have a teaching and learning coach. Going into a school year after quarantine where many students disengaged, Principal Futrell and I wanted to be intentional and create a teaching and learning position at are school. Our school wide adoption of the Modern Classroom Project also needed support from an instructional leader that understood the framework. With our extra funding, we moved one of our incredible teacher leaders into the role of a teaching and learning coach. In addition to instructional support, we knew that many of our students would be coming back to our school with a myriad of mental health needs. We know that mental health support agencies through DPS are inconsistent at best, so with that in mind we hired a licensed therapist for our school to support the needs of our students.

Budget Project-Benson Middle School
As part of our DPLA course work, Fellows were given a budget assignment where we were responsible for creating a budget for Benson Middle School. As part of the project we were given the schools data. Based on the qualitative and quantitate data, we were responsible for setting a budget and allocating funds to areas of need in the school. We decided on instructional and social emotional programs, technology needs, and resources for the school. |

B. Conflict Management and Resolution: The school executive effectively and efficiently manages the complexity of human interaction so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
Parkwood Elementary Restorative Justice Plan
One of the first things I ever did as a Principal Resident at Parkwood Elementary School was take a hard look a the school's discipline data. When I began to dig, I found that there were very high suspension rates around areas of the school that could be prevented with some teacher coaching and a focus on relationships. I was inspired by a restorative justice training facilitated through NC State and created my own restorative justice plan. I facilitated a professional development training to the 4th and 5th grade teams. In that PD, teachers learned about preventative circles, restorative circles and the importance of teaching the whole child. During my time at Parkwood I had the pleasure of watching the teachers who bought into this plan grow in their capacity for creating meaningful authentic relationships with their students. This led to lower suspensions and reduced disciplinary issues in these classes.

C. Systematic Communication: The school executive designs and utilizes various forms of formal and informal communication so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
DPLC School Wide Communication Google Document
The way in which we use school wide communication at Holton/DPLC is through our DPLC Google Document. On this sheet, both the Principal and I send out weekly updates, deadlines, and upcoming school wide events. On this page, we also keep our parent contact logs and updates around student attendance. This is used as a way to keep teachers and staff abreast to the on-goings of the school. A major part of this document is our Friday school rosters. Teachers update the roster every Wednesday on which students are required to attend Friday school. |
D. School Expectations for Student and Staff: The school executive develops and enforces expectations, structures, rules and procedures for students and staff.
DPLC as an Evacuation Shelter for Eastway Elementary School
In September of 2019, Eastway Elementary School had to evacuate their building. On this day, our Principal was out sick so the organization, management and timing of the Evacuation into our school fell to me. I remember Tina Ingram calling me and informing me of the situation. Once aware of what needed to be done, I quickly and intentionally created a plan that would make Eastways evacuation into our building as sooth a it can be. I immediately leveraged our schools relationship with DPR and got permission to gym and other DPR facilities on the second floor of our building. I was very intentional about placement of students. I knew from my time working in Elementary School that Kindergarten and 1st grade students had to be on the first floor. With that in mind, I created a layout where lower grades students would remain on the first floor and upper grade students would go to the gym. Our team of teachers and students were supportive and flexible making the transition to welcome Eastway seamless.

DPLC School Staff Handbook
As the Assistant Principal, it was my job to support our Principal in the creation of both our Student and Staff Handbooks. Every element that is needed to understand the expectations of the school are clearly accessible to anyone who reads it. These handbooks answers any questions a teacher may need, ranging from the amount of time you have for sick leave all the way to the processes and procedures for the EC referral process. All the school wide expectations for students are listed as well. Everything that you would want to know as a staff member at DPLC is at the fingertips of anyone who reads them.
