Standard 6: External Development Leadership
A principal will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but, in fact, build community, the leader proactively creates with staff, opportunities for parents/guardians, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investment of resources and good will are not left to chance.
A. Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach: The school executive designs structures and processes which result in parent and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
DPLC Senior Night
As part of our graduation programing, we annually invite seniors and their family to celebrate their success before the graduation ceremony takes place. We give awards, gifts and have a cookout under the breezeway. This is by far our most populated community event of the year. We are proud to celebrate our graduating seniors and enjoy time spent with our incredible families.

Virtual Open House Fall 2021
At the start of the 2021/22 school year the leadership team at DPLC facilitated a virtual open house for parents and students to come and gain information regarding the upcoming school year. We used this as an opportunity to explain upcoming changes to the school as well as safety protocol and procedures as we re-entered the building.
Duke Athletics Comes To Parkwood
The school counselors and administration team at Parkwood Elementary invited Duke athletes to come and speak to our 3rd grade students about hard work and determination in the classroom. When they were done with their presentation, the student athletes read two children's books to the kids. When they were finished reading, the students had the floor to ask the Duke students questions. Most questions centered around the sports they play. The speakers did a great job of always bringing the conversation back to hard work in the classroom. My role during this visit was to help facilitate the conversation between the students and the speakers. |

Monday Motivation: "Say No" Series
As part of our Monday motivation series that we do at Holton/PLC, we had two speakers come from the Durham community to speak about drug prevention. One of the presenters was a former convicted felon who was able to turn his life around. He gave a motivational speech about the choices he made and how they led him to where he is now. Currently, he is founder and owner of the Love and Respect Recovery House, an organization dedicate to helping addicts recover from drug abuse. This speaker was one of the strongest we have had thus far because his message resonated so much with so many of our students. He spoke about having a choice in your life, regardless of what is around you. During this presentation, I helped set up the room and helped manage the students and the distribution of lunch we ordered for the students. |
Holiday Chorus Concert
Every year at Parkwood Elementary, we open our doors to the community for a festive holiday celebration led by our chorus teacher. During this event we work hand in hand with our PTA to provide a meal for families coming to enjoy the show. During the 2017 holiday concert, the administrative team worked hard to set up the show, placing table cloths in the cafeteria and putting up the stage. Once the doors opened, we focused our energy on building relationships with parents and enjoyed the show by their side. There were three "programs" for the parents to enjoy: 1. Kindergarten 2. Lower Grades: 1st and 2nd Grade 3. Upper Grades: 3rd-5th Grade |

MTSS Facilitator and FAM-S
As the building MTSS facilitator, it was my job to be in charge of data collection, facilitating MTSS meetings and making sure that students had their interventions implemented with fidelity. In addition to facilitating meetings in house, part of my job was to conduct the yearly FAM-S state required meetings. Here I had to present the progress our school has made in its implementation of MTSS. The following artifact is the MTSS FAM-S action plan that I created to move our school towards full implementation. |

DPLC Testing Plan
When I began my work as an Assistant Principal at Holton/PLC, my Principal made me the testing coordinator for the school. As the testing coordinator, it is very important to make sure that protocols and procedures are followed that are dictated by the state. Every test needs a plan that follows those rules and regulations. The first plan I ever created was for ACCESS Testing. This was a complicated test to plan for because the test is broken up into four sections: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Following the guidelines set for by the District and the State, I was able to create a testing plan for our school. |
