Problem of Practice
As part of our coursework, fellows of the Durham Principal Leadership Academy were tasked with identifying a problem of practice. The purpose of this assignment was to build our knowledge about continuous improvement and evaluation in schools. We were responsible for planning, implementing and interpreting evaluations in schools. First, we created a theory of action about how our intervention will lead to outcomes. We then created a plan to evaluate the implementation and impact of our intervention. We then collected and analyzed data at our school sites. Lastly, we summarized results and made recommendations about the intervention. The culmination of the project was a presentation reporting our findings.
The Evaluation of Friday Schools Impact on School Improvement
What is Friday School?
The premise of Friday school is for students to come to school Monday-Thursday and meet the requirements set forth by their teachers. If the students meet their teachers expectations through their attendance and work quality, the student is not required to attend school on Friday. However, if the student does not meet expectation, they are required to attend Friday and meet with their assigning teacher for small group and one-on-one intervention.
Friday school is an initiative created at Holton/DPLC by the administrative team. By implementing Friday School, the goal was to reduce class sizes and thereby reduce student suspension, while also creating an incentive for students to increase academic performance and encourage attendance.

Qualitative Data:
As part of my problem of practice, I wanted to get an understanding on how the Friday School Initiative has been perceived throughout the school. I wanted to specifically target the teachers, counselors and students for these data points because each have their own unique lens on the effects of the initiative throughout the school.
